Amharic prosody
For my second qualifying paper and my ongoing dissertation, I am working with Jon Barnes to analyze word- and phrase-level prosody in Amharic, a Semitic language of Ethiopia. Our goal is to assess whether Amharic displays lexical stress as argued in various sources, or if it only displays phrase-level intonation. I presented this work at the 100th Annual Meeting of the Linguistic Society of America (LSA), the 55th Annual Conference on African Linguistics (ACAL), and at the CROSSIN workshop of Speech Prosody 2024.
Phonetic drift
I worked with Charles Chang on a project to identify the smallest amount of foreign language exposure that would lead to a change in L1 perception, or an effect of phonetic drift. This work was published in a special issue of the journal Languages.
Scottish Gaelic rhythm
My Master's Thesis at Arizona State University (ASU) involved analyzing the durational metrics of Scottish Gaelic to confirm its classification as a "stress-timed" language.
